Supersonic Festival 2010

I have to admit, I was sceptical and slightly apprehensive that Supersonic – being a predominantly rock music festival – wasn’t going to be my thing. I didn’t really know what to expect. I had no idea who any of the bands were. Actually I’d never been to a music festival before. But I can appreciate most genres of music and I’m an open minded person so I decided it was time to lose my festival virginity.

Supersonic came as a pleasant surprise. It seemed to be an amalgamation of styles from across the globe. Ranging from acts like Pierre Bastian who entranced the audience with his innovative ways of producing sound, to the numerous instruments and musicians that make up the psychedelic, electo sounding ‘Chrome Hoof.’ ‘Factory Floor’ were a popular choice among the line-up and not surprisingly as they radiated coolness with their combination of modern dance beats and bass-baritone, post-punk vocals.

Without a doubt the pinnacle of greatness was ’Nisennenmondai’ who returned to the festival after their popularity in 2009. There is nothing girly about the wickedly talented girl band, especially in the powerful drumming played with such vivacity it was enough to provoke some serious head banging within the crowd.

In amongst the unmistakable black leather and prominent facial hair that characterises the death metal fans, I was rather amazed to see a craft workshop where people were being encouraged to construct their own cutesy pom poms out of wool and attach them to their clothing. I was also impressed by the food. Contrary to the usual burger and chips you often find at festivals, throughout the day we were stuffed with all sorts of delights. There were a range of delicious looking cakes and pastries in the tea room and freshly cooked hot food - I had roasted vegetables on ciabatta with parmesan and pesto. Yum.

All in all Supersonic seems to be a celebration of originality and ingenious contemporary artists which we seldom see in the charts today. Forget the reputation. You’re bound to find something you like. I will definitely be back for more next year.
